New basket on the atlantis
I put a wald basket on a small nitto front rack this weekend, and tonight I tested it's grocery carrying abilities for the first time. It is the perfect size to fit a paper grocery bag, and the weight on the front feels quite stable. I'm afraid that if I keep adding racks and bags onto my bike that it will become much too heavy. As Bryan says, the more capacity you have, the more you are going to carry.

Cool, finally, someone I can ask questions about bicycles instead of reading tons of reviews from people who don't know much about cycling. Anyway, if I just want a bicycle to ride to the park and some occasional off road trails, how much $ am I looking at? Can I get something decent in the $300-$500? The Specialized and Canondales look cool. BTW, Arcade Fire's great! Thanks.
There are a lot of bikes in your price range that would serve your purposes. If you are looking for a good all-arounder type bike, I would look at the bianchi specialty bikes at bianchi.com. They have a great single speed bike called the San Jose that takes large tires that would be great for many types of terrain, and it also takes fenders and a rack. Also there is a model called the Castro Valley that is geared that has a built in generator hub and headlight as well as taking large tires and fenders. There are other bikes to be found like this, but I like these because they are versatile and have steel frames which are durable. BTW, Just saw Belle and Sebastian with the New Pornographers and that was an awesome show!
